What is periodontics?
Periodontics is the treatment of gum disease. In the earlier stages of periodontal disease, the treatment involves scaling and root plainings, which means removing plaque and tarter in the pockets around the teeth and smoothing the root surfaces as well as oral hygiene instruction. In most cases of early disease, scaling, root plaining, antibiotic application, and proper daily home care with regular three month maintenance visits are the basics required for a satisfactory result. More advanced cases may require surgical treatment.
Once you have been diagnosed and treated for periodontal disease, maintenance procedures will enable you to gain control of the disease and increase your chances of keeping your natural teeth.
Three monthly periodontal evaluations are advised together with removal of harmful bacterial plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line.
